Gilas Pilipinas misses out on OQT slot as Korea finishes ahead in rankings

MANILA, Philippines—Gilas Pilipinas’ woes continue as the team missed out on ticket to the Fiba Olympic Qualifying Tournaments in 2020.

Despite staying at the 31st spot in the Fiba rankings, the Philippines failed to get an invite after South Korea sealed the no.30 spot and the OQT slot after the World Cup in China.

Gilas went 0-5 in the World Cup and finished 32nd in the competition while Korea went home with a 1-4 record and settled for one place higher.

New Zealand and China, meanwhile, are headed to the OQTs.

The 16 best-placed non-qualified teams from the Fiba Basketball World Cup and the two-highest-ranked countries per region are included in the OQT.

Europe is represented 11 teams in the OQT namely Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia, the Czech Republic, Germany, Greece, Italy, Lithuania, Poland, Russia, and Turkey.

Brazil, Canada, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Mexico, and Uruguay round out the countries from the Americas while Senegal, Angola, and Tunisia are Africa’s nations in the OQT.
