Eumir Marcial settles for silver medal, loses to Russian foe at boxing worlds
MACAU—Eumir Marcial, the lone Filipino boxer to have to made it to the final, settled for the silver medal in the 2019 Aiba World Championships Saturday at Expo Centre in Ekaterinburg, Russia.
Marcial absorbed a 5-0 unanimous decision loss to Russia’s Gleb Bakshi in the title round of the middleweight event.
A knockdown early in the second round doomed Marcial chances as Bakshi connected with a sweeping left hook to send Filipino bet to the canvas. That proved to be the deciding factor as the Russian took the lead in all the scorecards, 29-28, 29-28, 29-27, 29-28.
Marcial was the more aggressive of the two but that second round saw Bakshi connect with the more meaningful shots.
Bakshi peppered Marcial with power shots, cutting up the Filipino near the left eye and prompting the ringside doctor to look at the wound a couple of times in the fight.
Marcial tried to counter in the third with flurries but Bakshi was wise enough to halt any momentum the two-time Southeast Asian Games gold medalist could establish.
