UST, La Salle still undefeated in UAAP women’s beach volleyball

MANILA, Philippines—University of Santo Tomas and De La Salle remained perfect in the women’s division of the UAAP Season 82 beach volleyball tournament after contrasting victories on Saturday at Sands SM By the Bay.

Babylove Barbon and Gen Eslapor of the Golden Tigresses, who are seeking a fourth straight title, quickly dispatched Adamson’s Kring Uy and Chen Ave, 21-10, 21-9, to not only get to a 4-0 record but also extend UST’s winning streak to 22 straight wins starting 2016.

The Lady Spikers had a different path to a 4-0 card after Tin Tiamzon and Justine Jazareno needed three sets to hold off Far Eastern University’ Sheena Gallentes and Sheila Mae Kiseo, 21-23, 21-10, 15-10.

FEU dropped to third with a 3-1 record.

Ateneo, meanwhile, improved to fourth seed after Ponggay Gaston and Roma Doromal swept National University’s Andrea Abian and Chlea dela Fuente, 21-10, 21-8.

University of the Philippines got into the winners’ table after Rosie Rosier and Euri Eslapor outlasted University of the East’s Lyen Ritual and Juliet Catindig, 12-21, 21-18, 15-13.

The Lady Maroons, Lady Falcons, and Lady Warriors are all tied at the 1-3 while the Lady Bulldogs are dead last with a 0-4 card.

In the men’s tournament, reigning titlist UST and runner up FEU maintained their hold of the top spot with the identical 5-0 records.

The Tiger Spikers’ Jaron Requinton and Rancel Vega swept University of the Philippines’ Niccolo Consuelo and Louis Gamban, 21-13, 21-8, in the morning game before turning back Ateneo’s Abai Llenos and Kurt Aguilar 21-19, 21-8 in the afternoon.

The Tamaraws’ Jude Garcia and Kevin Hadlocon, meanwhile, started their day with a sweep of Ateneo’s Llenos and Aguilar 21-8, 21-9, before taking down De La Salle’s Vince Maglinao and Ian Jumandos, 21-12, 21,15.

The two powers need just one more win in their final two matches to clinch twice-to-beat bonuses come the Final Four.

James Buytrago and James Natividad of National University turned back La Salle’s Maglinao and Jumandos, 21-14, 21-17, and University of the East’s Jake Abria and Lloyd Josafat, 21-18, 21-12.

Adamson University’s Leo Miranda and Jesus Valdez also had an unbeaten Saturday humbling UE’s Abria and Josafat, 21-13, 21-9, and followed it up with a 21-14, 21-14 victory over the Fighting Maroons’ Consuelo and Gamban.

The Soaring Falcons and the Bulldogs are joint at third with 3-2 records. UP fell to 2-3 at the fifth spot while the Green Spikers and Red Warriors fell to 1-4 with the Blue Eagles at a lowly 0-5.
