MANILA, Philippines—Jimmy Alapag, Jayson Castro and LA Tenorio huddled together in one corner of the Meralco Gym shortly after the national team pool’s first practice Monday night.
The scene was nothing short of nostalgic as if it was 2014 all over again.
“The memories came rushing back the moment we arrived for practice,” Castro, who cut his retirement from the national team short after getting an unexpected call-up, told reporters in Filipino.
“I never imagined that we’re all going to be together here,” he said.
Five years ago Alapag, Castro and Tenorio were part of the Gilas Pilipinas team that competed in the Fiba World Cup in Spain.
Now, the three are back together for the Southeast Asian Games here set later this year only this time, Alapag is now an assistant coach while Castro and Tenorio are likely to have their farewell tour for the national team in the SEA Games.
“Reunion for the three of us. We laugh every time we see each other eye to eye because we couldn’t believe we’re all here. We didn’t expect that we’re going to see each other here for the national team so I’m very happy and very blessed to be part of this,” said Tenorio, who is making his SEA Games debut.
