MANILA, Philippines—University of Santo Tomas’ dominance in the UAAP came as no surprise as the premier varsity league also marked the first time in three decades that all eight competing schools captured at least one crown.
By bagging eight championships in Season 74, the Tigers amassed a total of 298 points to clinch the seniors general championship for the 14th straight year.
The Tigers, who picked up their 39th overall crown, ruled the men’s competition in taekwondo, fencing and table tennis, the distaff side of football, tennis and beach volleyball, and swept men and women’s judo.
Notably this season, the country’s premier varsity league also showcased the growing competitiveness among the eight participating schools with each one bagging at least one title for the first time in 26 years.
National University, a perennial cellar-dweller, stunned the league favorites this time by copping the baseball championship and securing runner-up finishes in men’s badminton and tennis.
The Bulldogs last picked up a seniors division championship in 1986 through their men’s chess team.
La Salle compiled 278 points to finish behind UST in the general championship race.
The Archers dominated women’s volleyball for the second straight year aside from topping men’s swimming, men’s tennis and women’s chess.
Far Eastern U had 229 points to finish third, University of the Philippines was fourth (219), followed by host and four-time men’s basketball champion Ateneo (207).
