MANILA, Philippines—Athletes aren’t just stars in their respective fields, they also shine off the court.
That’s what top basketball and volleyball stars in the country just showed when they came together to lend a helping hand to ace spiker Jovelyn Gonzaga’s three-year-old nephew Calix Vander Gonzaga, who was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia.
The family is in need of financial aid for Calix’s treatment, specifically for his first 12 chemotherapy sessions.
Stars from the Premiere Volleyball League, Philippine Superliga, UAAP and PBA teamed up to give financial assistance through an auction set up by crack hitters Rachel Anne Daquis of Cignal and Carmela Tunay.

Tunay, the former University of Santo Tomas spiker, launched an auction page named Volleyball Community Unites for Baby CV on Facebook Monday where jerseys are up for bidding.
Among the basketball standouts taking part in the auction are reigning five-time MVP June Mar Fajardo of San Miguel Beer, Scottie Thompson and Aljon Mariano of Barangay Ginebra, PJ Simon of Magnolia, Jonathan Grey of NorthPort and Ricci Rivero of University of the Philippines.
Philippine volleyball’s biggest names in Alyssa Valdez, Mika Reyes and Cherry Rondina to name a few are also actively participating in the auction.
