MANILA, Philippines—Nesthy Petecio is headed to the semifinals after a dominant decision win over Japan’s Sena Irie, 4-1, in the featherweight quarterfinals of the Aiba World Women’s Boxing Championships Thursday at Sports Complex in Ulan Ude, Russia.
The victory gave Petecio, who is assured of a bronze medal, massive retribution since losing to Irie in the Asian Boxing Championships in April this year in Bangkok.
“I felt I wasn’t in top form in Thailand,” said Petecio. “This time I prepared diligently for the tournament.”
Petecio is set to face England’s Kariss Artingstall in the semifinals on Friday.
Aira Villegas will face top seed Hsiao Weng Huan in the quarterfinals of the flyweight division.
