MANILA, Philippines—Columbian took the spirit out of Blackwater with a 102-90 beating in the PBA Governors’ Cup Friday at Mall of Asia Arena.
The Dyip got back on the winning track after losing to TNT, 125-120, on Saturday and bumped their record to 3-2 to stay at the sixth seed.
Racing their pace from the start, the Dyip took immediate control of the game taking a 28-18 lead and what they did in the latter quarters was a methodical clamping of the Elite who never got to a tie with Columbian.
The closest Blackwater got was a three-point margin, 62-59, after Bobby Ray Parks’ three-pointer midway through the third but Columbian countered with an 8-2 run for the 70-61 lead off of Khapri Alstons’ jumper with 2:25 left in the quarter.
“I emphasized to my team that it’s important that we play team defense every quarter,” said Dyip head coach Johnedel Cardel in Filipino. “We started every quarter with good defense.”
Columbian saw three players score at least 20 points with Rashawn McCarthy leading the charge with 25 points, on 7-of-13 from beyond the arc, five rebounds, and four steals.
CJ Perez had 24 points, 10 rebounds, six assists, two steals, and two blocks to add to the Dyip’s offense while Alston had 24 points, 20 rebounds, and three steals.
Aaron Fuller led the Elite with 26 points and 10 boards.
Blackwater dropped to 1-3.
