MANILA, Philippines—Nesthy Petecio became the second Filipino to win the gold medal in a world championship in less than 24 hours.
Petecio ruled the featherweight division after edging hometown bet Liudmila Vorontsova by split decision in the final of the 2019 Aiba Women’s World Boxing Championships Sunday at FSK Sports Complex at Ulan-Ude, Russia.
Before Petecio, Josie Gabuco bagged the previous world championship gold for the Philippines back in 2012.
The 27-year-old Petecio advanced to the title round after turning back Karris Artingstall of England, 4-1, in the semifinals.
On Saturday night, Filipino gymnast Carlos Yulo delivered a historic gold medal in the 41st FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championships.
