CAPAS, TARLAC, Philippines — Speaker Alan Cayetano and Sen. Christopher “Bong” Go led the inspection here of the P13-billion New Clark City sports complex, one of the key venues of the biennial 30th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in November.

In a speech, the Taguig-Pateros representative vowed to support the budget for sports development and called on the public to unite in supporting Filipino athletes competing in the SEA Games.

“Let’s come together sans politics, sans sports politics and let’s support the Southeast Asian games because this is the time for the Filipino and the Philippines to shine,” the congressman said in a speech.

Cayetano is chairperson of the Philippine Southeast Asian Games Committee (Phisgoc) Foundation Inc., the organizing committee of the SEA Games, while Go is the head of the Senate sports panel. 

House Committee on Youth and Sports Development chairman and Valenzuela 2nd District Rep. Eric Martinez and other congressmen likewise joined the inspection trip.

The sports hub, developed by the Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA) starting March 2018, boasts of a 20,000-seat athletics stadium, a 2,000-seat aquatic center with an Olympic-size pool, and a seven-building athlete’s village which will house the SEA Games athletes, officials and volunteers.

 The said facilities form part of the 200-hectare National Government Administrative Center, a flagship project of the Duterte administration.

The athletic stadium’s design is inspired by Mount Pinatubo’s crater, Sierra Madre’s contours and details  and Pampanga’s famed “parols”or Christmas lanterns.

The aquatics center, meanwhile, drew inspiration from the woven fish nets of local fishermen, as well as Capiz shells.

The SEA Games will run from Nov 30. to Dec. 11, 2019.

The opening ceremony is scheduled at the Philippine Arena in Bocaue, Bulacan while the closing rites will be at the New Clark City, about 120 kilometers away from Manila. 

BCDA chief Vivencio Dizon said that after the SEA Games, the facilities would be tapped for the future Philippine High School for Sports, other schools and government agencies. /gsg
