PH’s Vanessa Sarno plucks 2 golds, silver at Asian junior weightlifting tilt

MANILA, Philippines—Philippine bet Vanessa Sarno reaped two golds and one silver medal in the 2019 Asian Youth and Junior Weightlifting Championships Friday in Pyongyang, North Korea.

Sarno ruled the 71-kilogram in the youth women’s division after lifting a total of 209 kilograms, boosted by a golden lift of 91 kg in the snatch event. She settled for a silver medal in clean and jerk with a lift of 118 kg.

Ju Hyang U of host North Korea took the gold in clean and jerk with a lift of 119 kgs, one kilo heavier than what Sarno put over her head, but settled for the silver in snatch and overall.

Nigora Suvonova of Uzbekistan won three bronze medals in the division.

Other Filipinos to take home medals are Chariz Macawli in the 40-kg youth women’s division and Rosegie Ramos in the women’s 49 kg.

Macawli took the silver medal with a total lift of 116 and 66 kg in clean and jerk and the bronze in snatch (50 kg).

Ramos, meanwhile, settled for the bronze after lifting 76 kg in the snatch category.
