LOOK: Japan’s Olympic stadium shines in lighting test

ANNTOKYO — The new National Stadium was beautifully illuminated Wednesday to test its lighting in Shinjuku Ward, Tokyo.

Construction is now in the final stages, with completion scheduled for the end of this month. The field is almost ready, and its green presents a vivid contrast with the reddish brown of the track. The exterior lighting was inspired by Japanese traditional lanterns such as bonbori and chochin.

Soft light from under the eaves, a feature of traditional Japanese architecture, quietly illuminates the stadium, which incorporates a great deal of Japanese wood.

Construction of the main building began in December 2016, and only one month remains until completion. Workers are currently testing the operations of each piece of equipment.

The stadium, the main venue of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics, will be fully unveiled soon.
