ANTIPOLO — Meralco secured a twice-to-beat bonus in the PBA Governors’ Cup quarterfinals at the expense of NorthPort, 103-89, Sunday night at Ynares Center here.
The Bolts found an unlikely hero in Anjo Caram, who fired a career-best 30 points to go with four steals in a scintillating performance off the bench..
“Anjo was just awesome. He gave us a big lift and pretty much guided us to victory,” said Meralco coach Norman Black.
“I give him a lot of credit leading the team. He knew that Baser (Amer) wasn’t a hundred percent,” he added.
Import Allen Durham tossed in 26 points and 19 rebounds, while Chris Newsome had 17 to propel Meralco into solo second place.
The Batang Pier drew 27 points from reinforcement Michael Qualls, 20 from Christian Standhardinger and 19 from skipper Sean Anthony.
Meralco, which has won its last five outings, hopes to continue its winning run when it wraps up its elimination round campaign against Rain or Shine next Sunday.
NorthPort, which is still in the playoff mix, takes on pace-setting NLEX on Wednesday before wrapping up its eliminations bid versus crowd darling Barangay Ginebra also next Sunday.
