MANILA, Philippines — Leo Avenido formed a deadly combination with new import Jarrid Famous as San Miguel Beer rolled past Chang Thailand, 92-77, in the Asean Basketball League Saturday night at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City.
The Beermen stormed to a 51-30 advantage at halftime with Avenido finishing with a team-high 26 points and Famous adding 18.
“We had to make some adjustments with [some new additions in the team], so we are still adjusting,” said San Miguel coach Bobby Parks after the Beermen picked up their third straight victory to stay in the top three with an 8-3 card.
In Jakarta, the AirAsia Philippine Patriots kept their hold of the top spot at 8-2 after slipping past the Indonesia Warriors, 72-68, at the Mahaka Square.
Anthony Johnson buried 24 points, the last two om key foul shots that gave the Patriots a 65-62 lead with just 63 ticks to go.
An Aldrech Ramos triple in the final 36 seconds gave the Patriots a breather, 68-63.
Avenido knocked in a triple following Aries Dimuanahan’s back-to-back treys as the Beermen opened up a 30-point spread, 82-52, midway in the fourth quarter.
Another key Avenido triple helped defuse a rally by the Slammers, who mounted a huge 18-0 run that pushed them within 12 points, 82-70, with over two minutes to go in the fourth quarter.
After a measly 6.5-point average in his first two outings, Famous turned in his best game yet with 18 markers and five boards
The Slammers, who recently retooled their lineup by hiring Filipinos Raymond Aguilar, JP Alcaraz and Earn Saguindel, dropped to 4-7.
