SEA Games: PH weightlifter John Ceniza cops silver medal

MANILA, Philippines—John Ceniza emerged as the latest Filipino weightlifter to win a medal in the 30th Southeast Asian Games on Sunday at Ninoy Aquino Stadium.

Ceniza snagged the silver medal in the men’s 55kg category after registering a total lift of 252.

The 21-year-old Ceniza came second to Vietnam’s Lai Gia Thanh, who tallied a total of 264, while Indonesia’s Surahmat Wijoyo claimed the bronze.

Ceniza successfully lifted 112kg in the snatch and 140kg in the clean and jerk both on his first attempt.

Earlier, Mary Flor Diaz, cousin of Olympic silver medalist Hidilyn, won the bronze in the women’s 49kg event.

Hidilyn, meanwhile, shoots for the gold in the women’s 55kg class on Monday.
