COLUMBUS — Michael Phelps capped a prosperous weekend by winning the 100-meter freestyle on Sunday at the Columbus Grand Prix, recording the second-best time in the world this year.
Phelps, a winner of eight gold medals in Beijing in 2008 and a total of 14 golds overall, was timed in 48.49 seconds to beat Nicolas Oliveira and Darian Townsend by almost a second.
Phelps also was scheduled to swim in the 200 backstroke but elected to drop out to save himself for the 100 free.
