MANILA, Philippines—After winning two golds in the 2019 Southeast Asian Games, wushu star Agatha Wong looks forward to a bit of rest to properly end the year.
The 21-year-old martial artist won the gold medals in the women’s taolu taijijian and taolu taijiquan in the regional meet and the next thing she wants to do it take a break after a tough 2019.
“I’ll hibernate,” said Wong with a chuckle Tuesday at World Trade Center. “I went through a lot this year.”

Wong took the gold in the taijijian scoring the winning mark of 9.65 and the title in the taijiquan tallying a score of 9.67.
Not only did she defend the gold in the taijiquan category, but she also improved from silver medal finish from 2017 in the taijijian competition.
Of the hundreds of Filipino athletes representing the host country in the event, Wong carried huge expectations leading up to the SEA Games after she followed up her success in the 2017 Malaysian meet with a gold medal in the 1st Asian Traditional Wushu competition in China in 2018.

This type of success drove Wong to train even harder during the months leading up to the SEA Games.
Wong said she wasn’t that satisfied with her own performance but the gold medals eventually vindicated whatever negative thought she had.
“For me, I don’t think I met my own expectation but results-wise I’m just so happy,” said Wong, who had to sacrifice holidays just to prepare for the SEA Games.
