MANILA, Philippines—Charly Suarez put on an offensive master class and earned a referee’s stoppage victory over Myanmar’s Min Arkar Paing in boxing men’s lightweight quarterfinals of the 30th Southeast Asian Games Thursday at PICC Forum.
Both boxers showed their aggressiveness early on in the first round but it was Suarez, a two-time SEA Games gold medalist, who landed the better shots including a stiff 1-2 combination that rocked Paing.
Suarez then continued his onslaught in the second round, sending Paing to the canvas early in the period.
With Paing unable to counter Suarez’s attacks, including a massive overhand right that landed squarely on the jaw, the referee decided to stop the bout midway through round.
“I didn’t expect this kind of result because all I wanted to do was to win in points and I never saw it that it would be finished this early,” said Suarez in Filipino. “As a fighter and as a boxer, I should be aggressive and not be complacent.”
Suarez is also through to the next round.
