SEA Games: Couple saves Philippines from gold shutout in archery

NEW CLARK CITY — They found love at the archery range. Now, aside from two children, they have a gold to show for it.

Olympian Rachelle Anne Dela Cruz and husband Paul Merton Dela Cruz bailed out Team Philippines in archery by winning the mixed team compound event.

They defeated Vietnam’s Chau Kiew Danh and Nguyen Van Day, 148-147, to nail the country’s only gold in the sport Monday in the 30th Southeast Asian Games at Clark Parade Grounds.

“Thank you, they saved the day,” said World Archery Philippines secretary general Rosendo Sombrio.

The Dela Cruzes met while training in the national team. They now raise a family at the athletes dorm inside F.R. Sevilla Archery in Novaliches, Quezon City.
