NEW CLARK CITY — Twenty-eight-year-old Melvin Calano launched the javelin farthest than he ever did to win the gold in the 30th Southeast Asian Games Monday.
A Palarong Pambansa standout from Paracale, Camarines Norte, Calano threw to a distance of 72.86 meters on his first and fourth tries to nail the championship in the biennial meet.
Calano said the atmosphere boosted him into breaking his own personal best of 69.48m.
Indonesia’s Hafiz Abd was silver medalist with 71.00m, while Vietnam’s Nguyen Hoai Van took the bronze with 70.88m.
