Gamma takes 1st step toward IOC approval, applies for observer status

MANILA, Philippines—Mixed martial arts got a step closer to becoming an Olympic sport after the Global Association of Mixed Martial Arts submitted its application for Observer Status with the Global Association of International Sport Federation.

Getting the Observer Status from the GAISF allows Gamma to strengthen its governance and representation of MMA in the international stage. It also paves the way for the International Olympic Committee’s recognition of the sport as an Olympic event.

As one of the figureheads of MMA, ONE Championship CEO Chatri Sityodtong lauded Gamma’s move since it brings the sport closer to the Olympics and it would help the stakeholders to help the amateur athletes in the sport.

“The sport of MMA is an incredible medium to unleash the greatness of humanity. ONE Championship’s partnership with Gamma is a testament to our commitment to giving all amateur athletes the support they need as they pursue a career in mixed martial arts, including opportunities to earn scholarships to train in the best gyms around the world,” said Sityodtong.

“I fully support Gamma’s dedication to further developing the sport of MMA and I’m excited to see it one day be recognized as an official sport in the Olympics,” added Sityodtong.

Gamma, which is based in Amsterdam, is made up MMA pioneers across five continents with president Alexander Engelhardt at its head and members made up of national federations from almost 100 countries.

“Gamma is built on a strong foundation of the true values of martial arts, and we believe having Observer Status with GAISF brings us closer to achieving our ultimate goal—to bring the sport of mixed martial arts to the Olympics,” said Engelhardt.
