MANILA, Philippines—Camarines Sur adds to its reputation as a hotspot for watersports and extreme sporting events by hosting the first leg of the Stand Up Paddle World Series on April 19 to 23 off the coast of San Jose town.
Camarines Sur Gov. LRay Villafuerte said Sunday the province recently won the bid to host the leg as he pledged to ensure that everything would be ready for the staging of the competition, which will be held in Asia for the first time.
“We will be ensuring that this is going to be a world-class event,” said Villafuerte. “My vision is to make the Philippines the stand-up paddleboard capital of the world.”
He said they are developing San Jose as a top destination for sports and eco-tourism.
The competition, CamSur World Paddle Challenge, dangles $20,000 in prize money.
Among those expected to vie for top honors are American Zane Scwheitzer, a finalist in the 2011 Sunset Beach World Tour; Kai Lenny, winner of the 2011 Stand Up World Tour in Hawaii; Australian Travis Grant, the 2012 ISA World Stand Up Paddle champion, and Australian Jamie Mitchell, the eight-time World Paddleboarding champion.
The province is home to the world-renowned CamSur Watersports Complex, which hosted the Wind or No Wind Board Jam kite boarding championship in December of last year, the Cobra Philippines Ironman triathlon from 2009 to 2011, the 2008 and 2009 WWA Wake Park World Championship and the Ultimate Wake Championship in January last year.
