Red Lions, Stags stay 1-2 with rousing wins
MANILA, Philippines—Proving he is ready for the pro league, Borgie Hermida produced a rare triple double to carry San Beda to a 10th straight victory with a 92-68 rout of Emilio Aguinaldo College Friday in the 86th NCAA basketball tournament at the FilOil Flying V Arena in San Juan. The 5-foot-8 Hermida, one of two NCAA players joining the PBA Draft tomorrow, scored 14 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and dished out 10 assists in a sterling all-around effort that drew praise from coach Frankie Lim. “He’s PBA material,” Lim said of the fifth-year playmaker. “I told him that since he cannot show all his wares in the Rookie Draft camp, he might as well show it here.” The Lions outscored the Generals, 34-13, in the first 10 minutes of the second half with Hermida sparking the surge with eight points. San Sebastian earlier overcame the absence of swingman Ronald Pascual and Calvin Abueva in the last three quarters to subdue St. Benilde, 62-51, for its ninth win in 10 games. Pascual missed the game due to a flu, and Abueva played only in the first quarter after spraining his ankle. “I’m happy everyone stepped up,” said San Sebastian coach Ato Agustin, who is set to leave the Stags to take over the head coaching reins at San Miguel Beer after the season. Both the Blazers and the Generals fell to 2-8. In juniors play, San Beda kept top spot with a 70-56 pummeling of EAC, while San Sebastian trounced St. Benilde, 74-69.
