MANILA, Philippines — Far Eastern University pounced on an error-prone University of the East side, 25-9, 25-20, 25-17, at the start of the UAAP Season 82 women’s volleyball tournament Tuesday at Mall of Asia Arena.
The Lady Tamaraws asserted themselves from the get-go and never let up behind their captain and setter Gel Cayuna.
Cayuna spearheaded her team’s balanced attack with nine points, highlighted by five service aces, and 18 excellent sets.
“I’m thankful for my players because my instruction was to start and finish the game strong because this is the first game and this will serve as our gauge,” said FEU head coach George Pascua, who hopes to steer his team back to the Final Four despite losing key players from last season.
FEU opened the game with six unanswered points. The Lady Tamaraws did not trail until early in the third set when the Lady Warriors led, 11-8, before FEU regained control and went back to work.
Jeanette Villareal led the Lady Tams with 11points while Ivana Agudo added 10. Returning spiker Lycha Ebon and Czarina Carandang chipped in nine and eight points, respectively.
Mary Ann Mendrez led all scorers with 13 for UE, which committed 20 errors.
