MANILA, Philippines — The UAAP on Tuesday announced it is extending the suspension of all its events until March 17 due to the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19).

Initially, the league was only suspending its games until March 14, but the UAAP Board of Managing Directors “unanimously decided to extend the suspension of all UAAP events” during an emergency meeting Tuesday.

“We will have another announcement by Monday, March 16, 2020, on how we will proceed with the rest of the UAAP season,” said in an updated statement by the UAAP.

The suspension came on the heels of Presdient Rodrigo Duterte’s declaration of public health emergency as the number of confirmed cases in the country continue to rise.

“The President of the Philippines has declared a State of Public Health Emergency and has ordered the suspension of classes in ALL levels in Metro Manila until March 14, 2020,” the league said Tuesday morning.

“More importantly, the President stated that ‘students (are) to be confined in their homes and will continue to study…,’” the UAAP said.

The Philippines has 35 confirmed cases as of posting time.

The NCAA on Monday also suspended all of its events indefinitely while also looking at the possibility of terminating the remainder of its 95th season altogether due to the virus.
