MANILA, Philippines—The pending UAAP Season 82 high school tournaments have been canceled even as University of Santo Tomas and Adamson have been declared co-champions of girls basketball, the league announced Saturday.

The announcement came on the heels of the continuous spread of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic that also forced President Rodrigo Duterte to place Metro Manila under “community quarantine.”

“We will continue to coordinate with lead government agencies to determine protocols for the safety of everyone in or connected the with UAAP community,” the UAAP said in a memorandum co-signed by president Emmanuel Fernandez and executive director Atty. Rebo Saguisag.

“The UAAP intends to do the greater good for the greater number, without disregarding the hard work of its coaches and student-athletes. We thank you for your patience and understanding in this most trying of times.”

The collegiate tournaments’ “regular formats” are also cancelled unless certain conditions are met, and that depends if the national government will declare that classes are safe to resume on April 15.

The UAAP will work toward “alternative formats of competition” for college sports that will begin no earlier than May 1.
