NBA stars share uplifting messages, reminders amid pandemic

MANILA, Philippines—NBA personalities sent out positive messages as the entire world deals with the COVID-19 pandemic.

Legend Magic Johnson, Pau Gasol, Kevin Love, and Trae Young were just some of the NBA personalities who gave reminders on the best practices as the world grinds into a halt with the cancellation of school, work, travel and large events including the NBA season.

Johnson, a five-time champion and three-time MVP for the Los Angeles Lakers, said the COVID-19 pandemic “are very scary times” but that the world can and will bounce back.

“Know that we can get through these times together,” said Johnson. “Let’s all follow all the health guidelines about washing your hands on a regular basis. It’s also important that we learn what it means to practice social distancing.”

“Avoid large crowds, parties, and other gatherings. Stay at home with your family. Let’s look out for each other, sending love and prayers to everyone at this time and stay healthy,” added Johnson.

The World Health Organization recommends that hand washing is still one of the strongest weapons against COVID-19 and that individuals should use soap and water for 20 seconds.

Young, a first time All-Star this season, said that those staying in their houses should still be active to maintain their health while countries are implementing lockdown protocols and quarantine measures.

“As we’re in these houses with our families, continue to stay active, whether it’s doing push ups or sit ups,” said Young. “My favorite is dribbling around the house with a basketball to stay active. We’re all going to get through this together. See you soon.”

Love, who helped the Cleveland Cavaliers to the 2016 title, said everyone should be kind and compassionate towards one another as the world is engulfed in negativity with the quick spread of COVID-19.

The pandemic has practically shut down everyday life and suspended almost all sports leagues.

“When you see people fall in hardships or going through hardships, it’s normal to feel this way. So I think now more than ever we have to practice compassion, we have to be kind,” said Love. We have to be mindful of our words, our actions, and really practice a sense of community.”

“I think you’ve seen the NBA community step up, we’ve seen people step up across all sports and beyond. We really need more of that because people want to feel like they’re part of something bigger as well as on the winning side of history,” added Love.

Gasol, a two-time champion with the Lakers, also thanked the frontliners who have been combatting the spread of COVID-19 and the medical personnel who’ve attended to those afflicted with the virus.

“I just want to make sure we take time to thank the doctors, nurses, and first responders who are out there everyday and help us fight this virus,” said Gasol. “We appreciate everything you do. I would also like to acknowledge everyone who’s out there providing essential services to all of us during this pandemic.”

“We will do our part to help slow down the spread. Stay strong and be safe.”
