The UAAP has lowered the curtains on season 82.
With the national government declaring an extension of the enhanced community quarantine, the UAAP canceled the remainder of its season on Tuesday as the country continues to grapple with the new coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic.
“With the enhanced community quarantine having been extended, the conditions for the resumption of UAAP Season 82 can no longer be met. As such it is now deemed canceled,” read a short statement sent to media offices and signed by Ateneo’s Emmanuel Fernandez, the league president, and executive director Rebo Saguisag.
The decision wipes out the highly popular volleyball tournament, which was just getting started when the initial quarantine was imposed on the country.
Unless otherwise ruled, Ateneo’s Lady Eagles and National U’s Bulldogs will extend their reign until Season 83.
“All other issues related thereto will be resolved at the proper time as we continue to focus our time, energy and resources in battling this crisis,” the statement read.
The Inquirer had earlier come out with a special report regarding the impact of the cancellation of leagues due to the global pandemic, with the UAAP tagged as among those that will be hit heavily financially.
The UAAP also thanked its “fans, partners, student-athletes, coaches and all other members of the UAAP community” in the statement. INQ
