MANILA, Philippines—Kung Fu Reyes isn’t just the mentor to the next generation of volleyball players, he’s also one of the country’s protectors.
During the Luzon-wide enhanced community quarantine, Reyes is tasked to keep peace and order and he’s now on standby ready to receive his orders at the Philippine Army’s general headquarters at Fort Bonifacio in Taguig.
Reyes, the head coach of University of Santo Tomas Golden Tigresses, said he’s part of the third batch of soldiers who will serve in the frontline against COVID-19, although there’s no definite date on when he’ll go out.
“It’s normal for us troops to serve in the frontline, and we also have quarantine facilities here in the Army,” said Staff Sergeant Reyes in Filipino Wednesday.
President Rodrigo Duterte put the Philippines’ largest island group under ECQ that started on March 17 to slow the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic and it’s the military that’s been tasked to man the borders.
Apart from manning checkpoints, the military are also tasked to deliver goods and most importantly maintain peace and order along with the Philippine National Police.
“Right now, we still don’t know what our assignment would be but it would probably be to maintain peace and order, and also monitor the people so they won’t get infected with the virus” said Reyes.
