MANILA, Philippines — The University of the Philippines women’s volleyball team has no plans of taking it easy despite the cancellation of UAAP Season 82.

Fighting Maroons head coach Godfrey Okumu said his team will continue to strive for improvement despite the shutdown due to the extension of the enhanced community quarantine brought about by the deadly coronavirus disease.

“We will continue working out when the lockdown is over. Our work is not yet done,” Okumu said.

Last week, the UAAP Board scrapped the remainder of Season 82 after the national government extended the Luzon-wide lockdown until April 30.

The cancellation resulted to the abrupt end of several events, including the women’s volleyball tournament, the centerpiece of the league’s second semester.

Okumu felt the UAAP made the right decision in putting everyone’s safety as the number one priority.

“The UAAP Board did a great thing of putting the safety of the teams first,” said Okumu, who added that even though the season is over they will still continue to work hard once it is deemed safe to do so.

“The safety of the players usually comes first, other things come second,” said Okumu. “Our top priority right now is the safety of our players, so we are avoiding coming together as an entire team.”
