MANILA, Philippines—Sean Anthony’s prominence continues to rise after he was named the PBA Press Corps’ Defensive Player of the Year for the 2019 season.
Anthony’s selection follows his inclusion in the Mythical First Team and the All-Defensive Team in the recent PBA Leo Awards.
The do-it all forward was a defensive menace for NorthPort when he led the league with 2.4 steals a game while also providing the intangibles on the defensive end.
Last season also marked Anthony’s best offensive year when he averaged 16.4 points, which made him the seventh best scorer in the league, together with 7.6 rebounds (fifth best), and 3.8 assists.
The 6-foot-4 Anthony was also the Batang Pier’s leading scorer among locals during the season, making him one of the top two-way players in the league today.
Previous recipients of the prestigious awards were Chris Ross, June Mar Fajardo, Poy Erram, Marc Pingris, Chris Jackson, Freddie Abuda, and Gabe Norwood.
The Defensive Player of the Year is one of 11 awards to be handed out during the PBA Press Corps Awards Night, which was originally scheduled on March 16 at Novotel Manila but got postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.
