MANILa—Defending champion San Beda trounced Ateneo, 66-54, to claim the No. 1 spot in Group A at the end of the classification phase of the fourth FCBL Freego Cup over the weekend at the
Buddhacare Gym in Quezon City.
Arve Tolentino fired 17 points to lead the balanced attack of the Red Cubs, who swept their six games in the annual high school event backed by Talk ‘N Text.
Tolentino was named the Freego Player of the Game.
Xavier finished fourth in its group after beating Mapua, 89-79, in the stage’s final game.
Jeron Teng fired 44 points for Xavier to also bag the Freego Player of the Game honor.
Despite the loss, the Red Robbins finished as the No. 2 seed in Group B with a 4-2 slate.
Hope Christian High School emerged the top seed in Group B with a 5-1 mark after routing University of Santo Tomas, 79-55. It will face the fourth-seeded Far Eastern U in the quarterfinals.
The Baby Tams (3-3) took the last spot in the quarterfinals after a 67-53 dumping of National University. The Bullpups (4-2) also advanced to meet University of Perpetual Help Altas, who bowed to Letran Squires, 61-63.
