MPBL: Pasay’s Reverente joins frontline amid coronavirus pandemic
MANILA, Philippines — The season may be over for forward Dhon Reverente but his battle has just begun.
Reverente, who plays for the Pasay Voyager in the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL), tucked away his jersey momentarily and put on his Philippine Navy uniform to join the fight against the coronavirus pandemic.
“I’m proud to be able to serve my countrymen,” said the Apprentice Seaman, who averaged 12.0 points and 11.5 rebounds in 32 games in the 2019-20 MPBL Lakan Season.
“My best weapon against an enemy we don’t see is prayer. It’s also important to have the knowledge on how to avoid getting the virus,” he added.
Reverente never had any second thoughts in answering the call of duty even though fully accepting the big responsibility meant not having to see his family for the time being.
Reverente, a Philippine Merchant Marine School (PMMS) product who has been waiting for orders at Fort Bonifacio in Taguig since the Luzon-wide lockdown, knows his sacrifices will go a long way. It also helps that his family is rallying behind him.
“My family has been very supportive. I’ve been seeing them through chat after duty. I’m scared to go home because I might end up infecting them with the virus so I just have to be really patient,” who enlisted for the Philippine Navy last year.
