MANILA, Philippines — The Philippine Basketball Association will announce the fate of its 45th season in August, following the government’s decision to prohibit sports events when Metro Manila moves into general community quarantine due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
PBA commissioner Willie Marcial told the Inquirer Saturday night that the Board headed by chair Ricky Vargas of TNT KaTropa unanimously decided to set an August deadline, before making any moves regarding the season.
At the latest, Marcial said the Philippine Cup can resume in October with teams given one month to practice before the games.
If the tournament can’t resume in October, Marcial said the league will cancel the entire season and just focus on preparation for the next in early 2021.
Marcial said the next three months gives the league time to observe the developments with a GCQ being implemented in Metro Manila.
“The Board didn’t want to make a decision right away and instead observe the developments from now until August,” said Marcial.
“Hopefully there will be a breakthrough in the fight against the virus which can allow us to push through with the season. Of course, the health and safety of the players, coaches, fans and the PBA family remain a priority.”
