Dear volleyball: Gumabao writes heartfelt letter amid pandemic

MANILA, Philippines — The coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic has also put things into perspective for volleyball star Michele Gumabao.

With sports on shutdown since March, Gumabao couldn’t help but feel emotional about not being able to play the game she loves and perform in front of the fans.

In a heartfelt entry on matchpointcovid’s Dear Volleyball on Instagram, Gumabao reaffirmed her passion for volleyball as she longs to get back on the court.

“Who knew that there would be a day where the early 5am alarms, everyday training and monotonous routines would be so badly missed,” Gumabao wrote.

“You tend to forget the reason you do what you do when you get caught in time and demand of it all. I forgot to stop and remind myself how thankful I am to be in the position I am because of you. I forgot to slowdown and be grateful for the game that gives me so much.”

The former La Salle standout also admitted to having thoughts of calling it a career during this time but stressed that quitting is not part of who she is.

“The slower pace during this time has granted needed time for reflection. Its giving thoughtful energy, helping realize how much more I could have given to the game,” she said.

“I acknowledge the feelings of being burnt out and retiring, but pushed them under the rug until now. Volleyball isn’t something we know how to stop, transition or give up; I have never been a quitter!”

The 27-year-old beauty queen, who plays for Creamline in the Premier Volleyball League, also urged everyone to “stay together and remain hopeful” amid the crisis.
