Eumir Marcial is serious about invading the pro ranks. He has started learning about taxation.
“I’ve heard a lot of stories about professional boxing champions who became famous and got rich but in the end, they lost all their money,” Marcial said in Filipino in a statement sent to media offices on Thursday. “A lot of times, it’s just for one reason. They had problems with their taxes.”
Marcial has linked up with archery chief Clint Aranas, a lawyer, to help him navigate the ins and outs of income tax.
“I want to learn about taxation for when I turn pro,” the Southeast Asian Games middleweight champion said. “Atty. Clint understands my position because he’s a [national sports association] leader and he has a heart for athletes.”
The Inquirer, through Percy Della’s Southpaw column, was the first to break Marcial’s decision to turn pro, even as he remains a gold medal hope for next year’s Tokyo Olympics.
“I now have confidence that I will be successful not only as a boxer but as someone who will have business dealings in the future now that I have a lawyer I can trust,” Marcial said.
