MANILA, Philippines — Mike Tyson hinted that his return to boxing is imminent, but a fight against Evander Holyfield, the one man who’s been tabbed as his likely opponent, is unlikely.
In an interview on Young Money Radio Show, the 53-year-old ring icon said the contract will be done “some time this week” and that there’s a slew of names who would be his opponent for the exhibition fight.
“We got many guys. Listen we’ve got so many guys who want to do this man,” said Tyson. “We’re in calls, we’re doing business with guys right now. You’re not going to believe the names when the names come out.”
Tyson has been teasing a comeback fight for weeks posting training videos in his Instagram account and showing off that ungodly power that made him an undisputed heavyweight champion during his prime in the 1980s.
His career ended unceremoniously, however, after he lost to Kevin McBride via knockout in 2005, nevertheless Tyson amassed a 50-6 record, with 44 knockouts, and was the undisputed heavyweight champion from 1987 to 1989.
Holyfield, whom Tyson had two memorable bouts in the 1990s, also posted several workout videos and was even training with another heavyweight king in Wladimir Klitshcko.
Tyson, though, seems to be looking at other names and not just at Holyfield for the charity fight that would benefit those who’ve fallen into the wrong substances.
“I’m going to take this money and help these homeless and we’re going to help these addicted brothers,” said Tyson. “Because I’ve been homeless and I’ve been addicted so I know the struggle. Not many people have survived like I did.”
“Whatever money we get, it’s going to somebody else. I’m not going to make any money—probably the company, my wife because she’s partners with me, she’ll make some probably. But my money is going to charity.”
