MANILA, Philippines—Floyd Mayweather Jr. has stated several times that he is happily retired but it seems the self-proclaimed “The Best Ever” will be making his return to boxing in one capacity or another.
According to TMZ, Mayweather signed on for a charity boxing event involving “big stars” but the former five-division champion won’t be fighting and instead will be at ringside to judge the fighters.
The report said that the charity event will be named “Fight for a Cause” and the proceeds will be used to help US Military charities and the COVID-19 relief.
Although the contestants haven’t finalized, TMZ reported that a couple of names are “big boxing stars” while others are from the NBA, Hollywood, and the worlds of MMA and comedy.
Organizers plan to hold the event at the end of June at a venue in Las Vegas and are working with health and wellness website Celebrity Sweat to execute the festivities.
Mayweather, despite being retired, remains involved in the sport as he helps train WBO World lightweight champion Devin Haney (24-0).
The 21-year-old rising star has been somewhat of a mentee of Mayweather’s and even hung out at the ring icon’s home and got to hold several of the legend’s titles.
