MANILA, Philippines — Former NBA veteran Brian Shaw will be the head coach of the NBA G League’s Southern California-based select team featuring Jalen Green and Kai Sotto, as per The Athletic’s Shams Charania.
Shaw is a three-time NBA champion serving as a key backup guard to Kobe Bryant during the Los Angeles Lakers’ three-peat from 2000-2002.
He won two more championships with the Lakers in 2009 and 2010 as one of Phil Jackson’s assistants.
“Brian Shaw has agreed to become the head coach of the new NBA G League elite pro team headlined by Jalen Green, sources tell @TheAthleticNBA @Stadium,” Charania tweeted Tuesday.
The Fil-American Green, the No. 1 high school prospect in the US, blazed a trail after choosing the developmental league’s pathway program over topnotch college programs.
It didn’t take long for Sotto to follow suit as the 7-foot-2 Filipino became the first international player to take the G League route.
The 18-year-old Sotto hopes to become the first full-blooded Filipino to make the NBA.
The 54-year-old Shaw is also the former head coach of the Denver Nuggets from 2013-2015. The Nuggets compiled a 56-85 record in only two seasons with Shaw at the helm.
