MANILA, Philippines — Roger Gorayeb has won countless crucial games throughout his legendary coaching career, but his biggest victory so far came outside the volleyball court after beating cancer.

Gorayeb, the former national team head coach, underwent eight cycles of therapy and four months of dialysis to recover from multiple myeloma, a type of cancer that forms in the plasma cells responsible for making antibodies.

In an Instagram post, his former player Gretchen Ho shared the good news Wednesday on Father’s Day.

“Faith over fear. It’s a miracle! Coach Roger Gorayeb is now negative for cancer,” posted Ho.

It was also in Ho’s website, womaninaction.ph, that Gorayeb detailed his battle in overcoming the illness.

“I had a serum test a month ago and it came out negative on everything,” said Gorayeb in Filipino. “It was zero, I’m cancer free. There are no signs, no lesions on my bones.”

“Of course the doctors don’t want to be complacent and I will have my final session on July 1. A week after that I’ll be tested again and if it’s negative again then I’ll just be on maintenance. Hopefully, it won’t return,” added Gorayeb.
