MANILA, Philippines– University of Santo Tomas’ embattled men’s basketball head coach Aldin Ayo has tendered his resignation, the Inquirer learned late Thursday.

The development, which was shared by a person closely monitoring the situation, comes on the heels of University Athletic Association of the Philippines Board of Managing Directors’ (BMD) meeting that tackled the Growling Tigers’ training in Ayo’s hometown of Sorsogon.

Ayo is reportedly facing sanctions—which the BMD has elevated to the league’s Board of Trustees—for the training camp which violated the national government’s guidelines for sports during the coronavirus pandemic.

FEATURED STORIES

UST is expected to act on Ayo’s notice this Friday as most of the Thomasian community—most notably its student-athletes and coaches—continue to reel from both the effects wrought upon by a health crisis and rumors of a heavy-handed sanction reminiscent of La Salle’s events-wide suspension in 2006.

The BMD said that its recommendations “cannot be made public at the moment” out of “respect to the member-school concerned.”

The training in question was put into light following the shock exit of UST’s skipper CJ Cansino.

Four more members of the Growling Tigers have since bolted the team, including incoming sophomore Rhenz Abando, who was the target of poaching attempts by rival schools last season.
