MANILA, Philippines—Aldin Ayo, the beleaguered basketball head coach of University of Santo Tomas, took responsibility for the long dragged out saga involving the Tigers after the team’s training camp in Sorsogon was revealed to the public.

He also confirmed on Friday that he has tendered his resignation.

In a statement, Ayo said that he will gladly face the punishment after reports swirled that the Growling Tigers were holding a training camp in Sorsogon despite quarantine protocols.

The team’s travel to Sorsogon was also questionable as travel was restricted due to COVID-19.

“I have tendered my resignation as head coach of the UST Mens’ Basketball Team,” wrote Ayo. “I deeply apologize to all of those who have been adversely affected by our activity and unnecessarily exposed to much condemnation especially the University,” wrote Ayo.

“I take responsibility for my actions and shall face the appropriate sanctions. And I shall go on a personal retreat.”

CJ Cansino, the team’s former captain who is now with University of the Philippines, was the first player to leave UST and the likes of Brent Paraiso, Rhenz Abando, and Ira Bataller all followed their former skipper’s lead.

UST is now under government investigation after its alleged quarantine breach.

Ayo, who led Letran and De La Salle to a title apiece in its respective leagues, was the first head coach to guide the Growling Tigers to the UAAP Finals after Bong de la Cruz did the feat back in 2015.

“I thank the UST community for their faith and continued support for the team. I ask for prayers that they, as well as I, may be able to recover from these very trying times,” wrote Ayo.
