MANILA, Philippines — Head coach Louie Alas has been the subject of talk as a potential coaching candidate following his surprise sacking at Phoenix on Friday.
Alas’ name has floated on social media as someone who should be considered by University of Santo Tomas as a possible coach for its men’s basketball team, which has a head coaching vacancy following the resignation of the embattled Aldin Ayo.
Alas, however, quelled any speculations, saying that no one from UST’s camp has reached out to him yet.
“Wala pa namang lumalapit (No one has contacted me yet),” Alas, one of the most respected mentors in the country, told INQUIRER.net in a text message Sunday.
Ayo, who led the Growling Tigers to the UAAP finals in 2019, resigned from his post amid the controversial Sorsogon bubble.
Alas is no stranger to coaching in the collegiate ranks having led Colegio de San Juan de Letran to three NCAA titles in 1998, 2003, and 2005 and interestingly it was Ayo, who led the Knights to its first championship after a 10-year drought.
The closest degree that Alas has with the Growling Tigers is the fact that UST and Letran are sister schools under the Dominican Order.
