MANILA, Philippines — Staying true to its vision, the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) is not keen on turning professional as it continues to serve as an avenue of opportunity for amateur players in the country.
“We will remain as an amateur league because our purpose is to give more exposure to our amateur players,” MPBL commissioner Kenneth Duremdes said during the PSA Forum webcast on Tuesday.
The MPBL, founded by Philippine sports legend and boxing champion Manny Pacquiao three years ago, has provided homegrown Filipino basketball players all over the country another platform to showcase their abilities.
Putting the spotlight on local talents remains as the league’s top priority.
“We believe in discovering homegrown talent all over the Philippines and to give them the right exposure, livelihood and opportunities to these players,” Duremdes, the PBA legend, said.
“That’s really the main reason for the MPBL’s existence.”
Last month, the Women’s National Basketball League (WNBL) gained professional status by the Games and Amusements Board (GAB) to become the first women’s pro league in the country.
