Ex-MBA player also applies for UST coaching job

MANILA, Philippines—Another candidate joined the hunt to become the head coach of University of Santo Tomas and replace the beleaguered Aldin Ayo.

According to reports, Lenny Reyes, who is coaching in the United States, expressed his desire to become the head coach of the Growling Tigers,  joining a long list of names who want to lead the team following the soap opera that is the Sorsogon Bubble.

“If given the opportunity, I am confident that I can help elevate the success of Tiger basketball to its championship glory by providing stability through three winning principles: Hard work, teamwork, and accountability,” wrote Reyes in his letter of intent.

Reyes was the head coach of former PBA Best Import Marqus Blakely in high school and was the no.12 overall pick by Purefoods in the 1996 PBA Draft.

Although he didn’t see much action for the Hotdogs, he was able to make his mark in the now-defunct Metropolitan Basketball Association playing for Cagayan de Oro Nuggets, Surigao Warriors, and Batangas Blades until he retired in 2000.

Reyes started coaching in the early 2000s and had Blakely under his tutelage in Metuchen High School from 2002 to 2004.

Since 2015, he has handled Piscataway Tech High School which won the 2019 GMC Gold Division title.

Reyes is just one of the many names who have expressed their intent to coach UST including former Alaska import Sean Chambers, Rain or Shine assistant Chris Gavina, Thailand head coach Chris Daleo, school alumni Siot Tanquingcen and Aris Dimaunahan.

Others linked to the job are former big men coach Chris Cantonjos and Eston Ballesteros, Ed Cordero, Gilbert Lao, Potit de Vera, and Jinino Manansala.
