Carlos Yulo 3rd in vault in Japan gymnastics tilt

MANILA, Philippines—Carlos Yulo placed third in the vault event of the 53rd All Japan Senior Masters Gymnastics Championships in Takasaki, Japan, marking his first competition since the 2019 Southeast Asian Games.

The 20-year-old Filipino notched 14.733 points, tying with Kenzo Shrai for No. 3 in the event. Wataru Kanigawa and Keisuke Asato topped the event at 14.900.

Yulo, who is headed to the Tokyo Olympics, failed to defend his spot in the floor exercises event, finishing with a lowly 13.966 mark for 19th place after ruling the category in 2019.

Yulo settled for 12th place overall with 83.398 points from six events. Gold medalist Kazuma Kaya wound up with 86.998 points.

The last time Yulo competed in the vault was in the 2019 Southeast Asian Games where he settled for the silver medal behind Indonesia’s Agus Prayoko in the December competition that was held in Manila.

Yulo’s Asahi Mutual Life team finished fifth overall in the team rankings.
