UST names new athletics director after Tigers’ bubble fiasco
MANILA, Philippines—University of Santo Tomas’ sports shakeup continued after the school appointed Rev. Fr. Rodel Cansancio, OP as the Acting Athletics Director of Institute of Physical Education and Athletics on an acting basis.
Cansancio replaced former director Fr. Ermito G. de Sagon, OP barely a month into the post.
Article continues after this advertisementBefore assuming the post, Cansancio previously served as the regent of UST High School and director of UST’s Purchasing Office.
Cansancio is also a member of the Priory of St. Thomas Aquinas as him being part of the Dominican Order of the Catholic Church.
De Sagon momentarily held the position after IPEA Athletics head Rev. Fr. Jannel Abogado, OP resigned from the post in the wake of the Sorsogon bubble mess that saw Aldin Ayo get banned from the UAAP and prompted an exodus of players including the promising core led CJ Cansino and Rhenz Abando.
Article continues after this advertisementBoth Ayo and Abogado are still under investigation regarding the training camp that was done amid lockdown protocols due to COVID-19.
As head of IPEA, Cansancio will be UST’s representative to the UAAP’s Board of Managing Directors.
