MANILA, Philippines — Mark Magsayo survived a tough challenge from a game Rigoberto Hermosillo of Mexico last Sunday to remain undefeated.

But Hall of Fame trainer Freddie Roach knows Magsayo could’ve done much better in the featherweight bout.

“Magsayo is one of the best punchers in our gym. He wasn’t letting his hands go enough,” said Roach as posted on boxingscene.com.

“We just need him to keep throwing more combinations, but he did enough to win the fight and we’re grateful for that.”

With Magsayo (21-0, 14 KOs) reluctant at times to throw hands, Hermosillo was the more active fighter throughout the 10-rounder.

According to CompuBox, Hermosillo threw (181-136) and landed (856-417) more than the Filipino.

The 25-year-old Tagbilaran City, Bohol native, though, connected the more definitive blows and was rewarded with a split-decision victory.

“I’m very happy to get this victory. Freddie got me in great shape for this fight and I’m happy working with him. I faced a tough fighter, but I know I’m ready to beat anyone in the division,” said Magsayo, who had Roach in his corner for the first time.
