MANILA, Philippines—University of Santo Tomas found its new men’s basketball coach in alum Jinino Manansala following the departure of Aldin Ayo.
According to multiple reports, Manansala will take over the reins as the Growling Tigers head to a new era following their first finals appearance in five years.
Manansala was an assistant of Ayo’s during his brief two-year tenure at UST, which finished second in Season 82 to champion Ateneo.
A student of famed head coach Aric del Rosario, Manansala played for UST from 1999 to 2003 and has led St. Clare to four straight titles in National Athletic Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities.
Manansala’s appointment came as a bit of a surprise after he initially resigned from his post following the fallout of the Sorsogon Bubble wherein it was alleged that the Growling Tigers held training sessions within Ayo’s property despite the quarantine protocols.
Nevertheless, the former Tiger will be handling a team that has been largely depleted following the transfers of captain CJ Cansino, reigning Rookie of the Year Mark Nonoy, and dependable forward Rhenz Abando among others.
Still with UST are defending MVP Soulemane Chabi Yo, Sherwin Concepcion and Bryan Santos.
Manansala edged out candidates Siot Tanquingcen, Aris Dimaunahan, Sean Chambers, Chris Gavina, Chris Cantonjos, and Estong Ballesteros.
