ATENEO, still far from championship form, scrambled to a 62-60 victory over Perpetual Help for its second straight win yesterday in the Filoil Flying V Hanes Premier Preseason Cup in San Juan.

Greg Slaughter nailed two free throws with three seconds remaining for the marginal points as the reigning UAAP champions followed up their 55-51 triumph over Letran on opening day.

Undaunted by the Eagles’ reputation, the Altas fought back from a 10-point deficit in the final period and tied the game with 13 seconds remaining on a triple by Jett Vidal, who was 1-for-10 from beyond the arc before making the shot.

San Beda gained a piece of the lead with Ateneo after overpowering University of Santo Tomas, 70-54, for victory No. 2.

In other games, Adamson repulsed Lyceum, 80-64, for its first victory even as Jose Rizal U bounced back with a 63-55 trouncing of Emilio Aguinaldo College.
